Scholarships There are several different types of scholarships available to Sookmyung TESOL MA students depending in large part on their status and degree of involvement in the program. Scholarship for Non-Korean Students A special scholarship is available to non-Korean students. It is important to note that the scholarship is not provided by the Sookmyung TESOL MA. As a result, we have no control over the terms and conditions of the scholarship. To get up-to-date information about this scholarship, current students and especially potential applicants should contact the International Student Support Team. Ms. Melissa Hasol Kim, Program Coordinator Office of International Affairs, Sookmyung Women's University 706 Administration Building, Cheongpa-ro 47-gil 100, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, 140-742, Korea T: +82-2-710-9813/9385, F: +82-2-710-9285, Email: admission@sm.ac.kr In addition to the scholarship from the university, Korean Government provides a few scholarship programs for international students. One of them is Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) for Graduate course. 700 persons are selected for graduate course scholarship on the condition that grantees take Korean language training courses for 1 year at a language institution located on-campus of the domestic universities. You can find more information on the website below. http://www.studyinkorea.go.kr/en/sub/gks/allnew_invite.do Scholarship for Public School Teachers This scholarship covers 30 percent of the tuition fees for all five semesters. It it applies to Koreans who are licensed teachers and are officially part of the government-sanctioned public school system. To receive this scholarship one also needs to have applied and registered for the program as a 'special' student. Students need to handle the scholarship application process themselves (that is, gather all the required documents) and will be informed of the submission date for applications by the departmental Teaching Assistant. Academic Scholarships for Regular Students Each semester there are several scholarships are provided to regular students in the program. These scholarships amount to 1 million won each and are awarded based on academic performance in the previous semester. Students who have been selected for this scholarship will be informed at the beginning of the semester. 'Diligent' Student Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to one student each semester who has proven her or himself to be diligent and studious the previous semester. Academically engaged as evidenced by a GPA of 4.0 or above, the 'diligent' student has also been involved in extra-curricular activities (such as the Journal Committee, Symposium, etc.) within the TESOL MA program. The recipient of this scholarship receives 500,000 KRW. Please note that this is the only scholarship that international students can receive on top of their regular semester scholarships. Scholarship for Researchers There is a scholarship funded by National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) for people who are interested in professional research. Here is a link about the funding for research opportunities. https://www.nrf.re.kr/eng/cms/page/main?menu_no=205 Assistantships (조교장학금) There are several ways in which students are able to serve the program and receive some sort of small compensation for their service. The first of these is through the very important role of the departmental TA (Teaching Assistant). The TA serves for a period of two semesters and is awarded a full tuition waver plus possible bonuses. This is considered a full-time job and she/he plays an important role in organizing official departmental events, deals with student and professorial affairs, and acts as a liaison between the school administration and the department. The TA is provided with her own office (the TESL MA office) and computer on which to work. The department also has several positions for RAs (Research Assistants). RAs are selected and essentially works as assistants for different professors in the department, but are also expected to help the TA when necessary. The position is considered part-time and lasts for one semester, but is also renewable. The payment per semester is approximately 1.5 million won. The specific conditions for each RA depends on the professor for whom she is working. A message will be posted up on the MA Message Board letting students now when these positions open up. Student Union Officials The Sookmyung TESOL MA also has its own student union. This is composed of two students, a president and a vice-president. The responsibilities of the student union are to plan and facilitate departmental events such as the semester begin party, and the end of the semester symposium. They also assist in the publication of the departmental journal, Issues in EFL. Either the president or the vice-president receive an academic scholarship during their time serving the department. That is, a scholarship is supplied for only one person per semester. The student union also owns a computer that is situated in the MA office. This computer is to be used for any necessary school work. Scholarship for Sookmyung Graduates The official name of this scholarship is: Outstanding Undergraduate Alumni Scholarship. This scholarship is for Sookmyung graduates who are in the MA program AND working in a full-time position in the university, such as 전임조교B (TA), 관리조교, or 행정조교. Only students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 as an undergraduate are eligible for this scholarship. Also, to maintain the scholarship the student must maintain a GPA of 4.0 in the MA program. Eligible students who are interested in this scholarship must first get into the TESOL MA and apply for a TA position. Once one has been given a TA position by the university, the student can then apply for this scholarship separately. Notices will be posted up about this at the relevant times. This Scholarship is separate and operates in addition to the TA position and there is a separate application process. Essentially, the recipient receives 300,000 won per month for this scholarship. This comes on top of the tuition waver she/he will receive as a TA and also possibly the new student scholarship. Since the TESOL MA office only has one TA a TESOL MA student can work in another office as a TA and receive this scholarship. Scholarship for Newly Admitted Students A scholarship is provided to students newly admitted into Graduate School of Professional Studies programs. This scholarship is for newly admitted, regular applicants/students only and will be paid out in the recipient's first MA semester. Basically, the top twenty percent of the student who apply to and subsequently register for the MA program for any given semester will be awarded this scholarship. The amount of money awarded varies each semester. This is a one-off scholarship in that one can only receive this her/his first semester in the TESOL MA. This scholarship is special in that it is awarded in addition to other scholarships. So, for example, one can be a TA and a Sookmyung graduate and still get this scholarship in addition to what she/he receives for those. Conditions Regarding Scholarships Scholarships are retroactive in nature. This means that the student is first required to pay all necessary fees and the scholarship money is paid later. Exactly when the money is paid back depends on the type of scholarship. Performance-based scholarships, such as the scholarship for non-Koreans and the academic scholarship for regular students, are paid usually in the beginning of the semester in the semester following the one for which the scholarship applies. So the scholarship money for the fall semester will be paid in the spring. No student is allowed to receive more than one scholarship at any given time, with the exception of the scholarship for newly admitted students as described above. Information on scholarships is also available on the website of the Graduate School of Professional Studies website (http://gss.sookmyung.ac.kr/). 장학금에 대한 추가 정보는 링크를 통해 확인 가능
