The first of these is through the very important role of the departmental TA (Teaching Assistant). The TA serves for a period of two semesters and is awarded a full tuition waver plus possible bonuses. This is considered a full-time job and she/he plays an important role in organizing official departmental events, deals with student and professorial affairs, and acts as a liaison between the school administration and the department. The TA is provided with her own office (the TESL MA office) and computer on which to work.
The department also has several positions for RAs (Research Assistants). RAs are selected and essentially works as assistants for different professors in the department, but are also expected to help the TA when necessary. The position is considered part-time and lasts for one semester, but is also renewable. The payment per semester is approximately 1.5 million won. The specific conditions for each RA depends on the professor for whom she is working. A message will be posted up on the MA Message Board letting students now when these positions open up.
This scholarship is for Sookmyung graduates who are in the MA program AND working in a full-time position in the university, such as 전임조교B (TA), 관리조교, or 행정조교. Only students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 as an undergraduate are eligible for this scholarship. Also, to maintain the scholarship the student must maintain a GPA of 4.0 in the MA program.
Eligible students who are interested in this scholarship must first get into the TESOL MA and apply for a TA position. Once one has been given a TA position by the university, the student can then apply for this scholarship separately. Notices will be posted up about this at the relevant times. This Scholarship is separate and operates in addition to the TA position and there is a separate application process.
Essentially, the recipient receives 300,000 won per month for this scholarship. This comes on top of the tuition waver she/he will receive as a TA and also possibly the new student scholarship.
Since the TESOL MA office only has one TA a TESOL MA student can work in another office as a TA and receive this scholarship.

Conditions Regarding Scholarships
Scholarships are retroactive in nature. This means that the student is first required to pay all necessary fees and the scholarship money is paid later. Exactly when the money is paid back depends on the type of scholarship. Performance-based scholarships, such as the scholarship for non-Koreans and the academic scholarship for regular students, are paid usually in the beginning of the semester in the semester following the one for which the scholarship applies. So the scholarship money for the fall semester will be paid in the spring.
No student is allowed to receive more than one scholarship at any given time, with the exception of the scholarship for newly admitted students as described above.
Information on scholarships is also available on the website of the Graduate School of Professional Studies website (http://gss.sookmyung.ac.kr/).
