The Sookmyung TESOL MA Program is a student-centered program designed around working teachers. Classes are offered predominantly in the evenings during the week from 6:20 to 9:00. There are now weekend classes as well and we are experimenting with classes during the day, all in an effort to meet student needs.
We accept new students for both the fall and spring semesters. Our semesters are 16 weeks long and follow the regular Korean university schedule. Classes for the spring semester begin on March 1 and in the fall semester on September 1. Application periods falls four months before semester begin (end of November for the spring and end of May for fall). Those interested in applying need to be sure they contact us early.
The program takes five semesters to complete. (자격증 과정을 수료한 학생은 논문, 실습 수업 포함 4학기 / 자격증 과정을 거치지 않고 대학원에 입학한 학생은 논문, 실습 포함 5학기를 수강해야 함.) Students need to take a total of 30 credits. Twenty-four of these are in elective courses and a further six in a final semester thesis or the Practicum. This basically means that MA students take two courses per semester. There are, however, under the Early Graduation option, opportunities for excellent students to take more courses per semester and graduate faster.
The Sookmyung TESOL MA distinguishes itself through its student-centered approach. Students are given the freedom and responsibility for choosing what the will do in the program with the guidance of an academic counselor. In the MA elective period, students generally choose two courses among a wide set of offerings per semester. This variety of choice enables MA students to take the courses that they feel benefit them the most. Students are free to develop a specific expertise in a certain area or develop a wide arrange of skills and knowledge in TESOL.
The curriculum for the MA is designed to be student friendly. Although courses are designed at the more basic and more advanced levels, in the Sookmyung TESOL MA there are no prerequisites among elective courses. Students are free to take any elective course on offer. Students take courses together regardless of experience in the MA or what other courses they may have taken. We believe that this kind of setting provides many opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds, interests and degrees of experience in the MA to learn collectively from each other. Within the courses themselves, students are also often able to choose the types of projects they will to pursue and write up as part of the course requirements. This enables students to choose themselves whether they will develop either a more theoretically-based project or one which is centered on more practical applications of concepts.
As a Content-based program with a dual focus on the development of content knowledge as well as academic skills (including language), TESOL MA students are expected to develop and further enhance academic skills and particularly in English. We provide students opportunities to use English in new ways that challenges them and also results in dramatic improvement. Students definitely leave the program different from when they entered.

Early Graduation for Excellent Students
It is possible for students with high academic standing to apply for early graduation. This basically entails taking more than the usual two courses each semester. Students who are interested in doing this need to apply one month before before the semester begins. That means applications for the falls semester should be made in the very beginning of August and applications for the spring semester should be made the beginning of February. New students can apply at a later date. Applications must be made to the kyohak team of the Graduate School of Professional Studies (특수대학원 교학팀) (02-710-9083).
Under this scheme, students are allowed to take one extra course per semester and the tuition fees will be altered accordingly (one more course (total 3 courses) = 1.5 * current tuition fee). Students can avail of this opportunity multiple times. It is, therefore, possible to complete the MA in as little as three semesters. Students interested in this should talk to their academic counselor and then the Kyohak team.
How to apply?
First, procure the application form (기준학점초과신청서). You can ask the TESOL MA TA about how to get this form. Once you have filled in the form get the signature of the Head of Department of the Department of TESOL and submit the form to the 특수대학원 교학팀.
Early graduation is only available to Regular, Non-transfer students. All other types of student are not eligible.
