Program Overview
(예비 신입생 필독)
The graphic below below provides a quick overview of the Sookmyung TESOL MA Program.
First Semester Options
There are two different options available for the first semester based on how one applies to the program. Interested parties can apply as either non-transfer or transfer students. Transfer students are those that have successfully completed an approved Sookmyung TESOL Certificate. For them the certificate provides 6 credits or one semester in the MA (자격증 과정은 첫학기로 인정됨). It is important to note that transfer applicants need to apply the same as everyone else and are not necessarily given an advantage in the application process. Non-transfer students simply do 24 credits (4 semesters) of MA electives (자격증 과정을 수강하지 않은 경우 논문학기 포함 총 5학기를 수강해야 합니다.)
One needs to consider carefully what she or he wants to do for the first semester and we suggest you contact the MA office for information and advice. As of 2015, once one has entered the MA they will be neither required nor able to do a certificate program. It is important to inform oneself and consider the different possibilities before applying to the MA.

Elective Courses
The Sookmyung TESOL MA provides a specialized program that respects the diversity of our students, by allowing students to decide all aspects of their MA experience. This starts with the classes on offer. The field of TESOL is a very diverse area of study and as such draws students with a wide variety of backgrounds, interests, and goals. We provide a diverse curriculum that caters to our dynamic and eclectic student body through an extensive choice of course offerings. The basic philosophy is that each and very student should be able to chose and excel in ways that address her or his special interests. Extending this, TESOL MA students are able to choose courses that allow them to pursue their one specific interests within the field of TESOL.
The Sookmyung TESOL MA offers classes organized into five different concentrations, as shown below. Minimally one class from each concentration is offered each semester. Courses are also differentiated by their degree of focus. Courses deemed 'more basic' have a wider area of focus while 'more advanced' courses tend to focus on a more specific theme. There are no prerequisites. That is, 'more basic' courses do not need to be taken before 'more advanced' classes. Students are free to take any elective in which they are interested. But with such a wide selection of courses it is strongly suggested that students get advice on the courses they take from peers and professors. Enhance the student experience by talking to people and getting advice on all the diverse offerings.

These different courses run in a regular two-year rotation. Each semester we offer a minimum of 7 different elective courses, at least one from each of the five concentrations. Students doing their electives typically choose two of the seven courses offered. Several of the more important courses appear more often in the cycle.
Below please find the 2 year cycle. The cycle allows students to plan out in advance the courses they might want to take during their TESOL MA experience. As always, student are strongly encouraged to seek guidance from their Academic Counselor and others in choosing courses.

The Final Semester
For the final semester students have a choice of doing a Thesis or the Practicum.
Thesis / Practicum
Students are guided through the process of deciding which option to take by their Academic Counselor as well as other professors and peers. It is essential that students start thinking about which of these options might suit them best early on in the program. It is also very important to note that once one has officially started one option, the thesis for example, he or she cannot switch to the other. This means that one needs to decide very carefully.(한 번 선택된 사항은 변경이 불가능 하므로 심사숙고하여 결정해 주시기 바랍니다.)
