Faculty

The program is defined by the tremendous options available to students. Sookmyung TESOL MA students are guided in all aspects of the program by the diverse members of our international faculty. 

​Faculty focus on the students starts early and potential candidates are encouraged to contact faculty members prior to applying. Immediately upon being accepted into the program, each Sookmyung TESOL MA student is provided an Academic Counselor from among the faculty members. The role of the Academic Counselor is to guide the student through all aspects of the MA program including the course selection process, skill building in academics as well as teaching, and of course doing research. We hope that the students avail of the services we provide and forge a strong relationship with their peers as well as the faculty members.

     Kang Nam-joon, who is the director of both TESOL MA and TESOL certification courses, obtained her doctorate degree from the University of Leeds in UK with the focus on young learners and textbook evaluation. For more than 30 years, she has been interested in teaching students, developing English television programs, and creating cognitively and psychologically appropriate ELT materials. She has participated in several projects related to co-teaching, SBLT, and creativity-enhancing activities. She was also involved in the development of daily English television programs for kindergarten and elementary school learners on EBS, using subject-based language education as a commentator, curriculum developer, and studio teacher. Currently, she is interested in applying drama-based activities, child psychology, and therapeutic approaches at TESOL with the aim of supporting learners with psychological problems. She currently teaches courses in young learners, ELT textbook development and child psychology at TESOL MA. www.tesolmayl.com.

Stephen van Vlack

​     Stephen van Vlack obtained both his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from the University of Dublin, Trinity College, in the Republic of Ireland with a focus on cognitive neuroscience and its implications on linguistic theory and applied linguistic applications. He has taught linguistics and applied linguistics courses in Germany, Singapore, and South Korea and has been involved with Sookmyung TESOL since its inception. His special interest is in the area of theoretical models of language and language teaching. Essentially, he is interested in the question of how language works and feels that one of the most interesting and useful ways of determining that is to look at multilingual systems and how languages are learned and used across in a variety of situations. http://www.udindfor.com.

Diane Rozells

     Diane Rozells has a PhD in Education from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and an MA from the University of Sydney, Australia. In addition to having taught English and Communications at Korean universities, she worked at a centre for educational research at Nanyang Technological University, funded by the Singapore government to conduct research in Singapore schools. Her areas of interest include creativity and wisdom in education, pedagogical practice, teachers’ beliefs and the philosophical foundations of education. She currently teaches the Practicum I and II courses at the TESOL MA program.

Nevin Liddy

     Nevin Liddy has has a M.A in Second Language Acquisition from Louisiana State University and is a Doctoral Candidate in English Language Education at Seoul National University. He has been training teachers at Sookmyung Women's University since 2004 and is currently working with both undergraduate and graduate students for a diverse range language majors. He has a diverse range of research interests including (but not limited to) cognitive accounts of second language acquisition, the role of in-class interaction in instructed second language acquisition, the application of technology in second language classrooms, and various issues in quantitative SLA research methodology.
